DESIGNER + ILLUSTRATOR

Southerly Design is a boutique design brand focused on pattern, illustration, branding and web design.

I believe creating provides a deep connection with the natural world.

I’m Karen Marie, designer and illustrator.

I started Southerly Design in 2018 after learning Adobe Illustrator and finding I love making patterns. My art includes mostly flora and fauna. I love finding inspiration from the flowers blooming in the garden and the swarming butterflies that seek them out.

Magnolias in May

Fabric

Magnolias are one of my favorite flowers. Magnolias in May is a rich floral print featuring beautiful blooms from Magnolia grandiflora (Southern Magnolias). The flowers bloom in May. This pattern was one of my favorites to design, and see come to life since it had so much meaning to me as it reminds me of my daughter, Magnolia May. I love the pink since it reminds me of her sweet outfits and the beautiful white flowers for which she is named.

Bluebonnets & Prickly Pear Cacti

Fabric

Bluebonnets are a quintessential Texas wildflower. They bloom in dry conditions, often near cacti in the Hill Country. Bluebonnets are a favorite in Texas. They are a perennial wildflower that bloom each spring in late March to early April. They have beautiful blue hues and often appear on roadsides in Texas. Indian Paintbrushes often bloom closely. This pattern is shown with a cobalt blue background.

What is Surface Pattern Design?

Seeing patterns come to life on real products is so exciting as an artist and designer. Surface Pattern Design is an artistic field that uses seamless repeat patterns on surfaces such as fabric, stationery, clothing, home decor, textiles, and more.  It is ubiquitous as there are so many products that need designs. Patterns are often created by hand through drawing or painting illustrations. The design is digitized and created into a pattern that repeats infinitely, and seamlessly.

“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

— William Morris
